– We care but we do not act!
A few weeks ago an American study about Climate change was released, called “The spiral of silence”. The study showed that even though the majority of Americans are interested in the issue of global warming and acknowledges its importance, they very rarely speak about it with friends and family. The researchers therefore suggest that there is a “spiral of silence” – because people never hear others talk about climate change, they do not talk about it themselves.
Similarly, in Denmark polls show that the majority of Danish people say that they do care about climate change but when they are asked about their willingness to act on it, for instance by traveling less, 36% replies that they are not willing to change their behavior at all. So in conclusion we claim that we care but we do not do anything about it! Why is that?
Author George Marshall has written a whole book on this topic called: “Don’t Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change.” If you are not interested in reading the whole book, Joe Hanson has summarized the essence of this book in this short and interesting video that is worth spending a few minutes on:
